Paying for the Peak? Over-earning, normalized P/Es and the price of growth
How much of today's equity earnings rests on margins that companies have never sustained? In this briefing, AQA Capital's quantitative research walks through Paying for the Peak?, a normalization test on 500 US and 255 European listed companies from the ADW Global Quant universe.
The method holds revenue at consensus and reverts each company's net margin to its own five-year average. In the US, 19% of aggregate consensus earnings sits above that norm and the aggregate P/E moves from 22.1x to 27.3x. The excess is concentrated: 148 over-earners hold 84% of it, and 50 companies, a quarter of US market cap, combine top-quintile expected growth with over-earning (22.1x consensus, 48.6x normalized).
What the video covers:
- How the normalization works, and its three caveats
- Where earnings are at risk by sector and industry
- Why over-earners look cheap on consensus and expensive on normal margins
- How much the market pays for forecast growth, and a conditional stress test
- Europe: the same 19% headline, a different cycle
